About
Build‑A‑Title is a turn‑based movie word game, inspired by the “Build‑A‑Title” segment from Doug Loves Movies. You and the computer take turns extending one ever‑growing title.
The rules
- A film joins at either end of the title, never the middle.
- The shared word is merged, not repeated: Live and Let Die plus Die Hard is Live and Let Die Hard.
- So a reply has to add something. A single‑word film is eaten whole by the overlap, though it is a fine way to start.
- No film twice.
- Whoever runs out of answers loses.
No hints, deliberately
There is no autocomplete and no list of films that would fit. Dredging the title up yourself is the game; being shown four that work is a reading exercise. The game will still tell you if it has never heard of what you typed, and it will tell you why a film was rejected — but it will not tell you what to play.
Difficulty
Difficulty is how well the computer plays, not how much it knows. It draws from exactly the pool you do — every film here with an English title. What changes is how far ahead it looks: easy takes any legal move, medium takes a winning one when it sees it, and hard also refuses to hand you one. The clock tightens as the opponent gets stronger.
Where the films come from
Every film is from The Movie Database. This project is non‑commercial.
